Solar energy has become the most popular source for renewable energy in the world. As new technology is discovered, we’re learning how to use the sun to power both our homes and our businesses on a large scale. This is more important than ever with the effects of global warming looming over our future. The evidence of climate change is all around us, and it’s becoming imperative that we wean ourselves off of the dependence on fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are the organic materials that we mine from the Earth, and burn for energy. Not only does mining these products cause problems for the planet, burning them also releases greenhouse gasses. These are noxious gasses that get trapped in the atmosphere, and don’t allow heat to escape from the Earth’s surface.
The rising temperatures coupled with increased air pollution has caused enough of a worldwide problem to draw attention to the issue. The importance of renewable energy resources has peaked a race for the next technological breakthrough in energy production and storage. Some of the greatest minds in the world are coming together to create ways to power our homes without harming the planet. This has resulted in new systems capable of being installed on homes and businesses with ease. These solar power systems can work with or replace the energy grid, depending on the preferences of the owner and the building’s location. It’s now perfectly normal to see solar panels on the roofs and lawns of homes in every town.
The Kamuthi Solar Power Project
In November 2016, this power plant took its rightful place as the largest solar power plant in the entire world (only to be beaten byAs much as these small accomplishments help, they are not capable of the large-scale changes that are still needed to reverse the effects of global warming. This is why many scientists and manufacturers have turned their attentions to much larger projects. With the lower solar panel prices, and new production techniques- entire solar farms are becoming possible everywhere. There are some projects that dwarf even the most ambitious of these solar farms.
China in 2017). Located in India, this power plant has over 2.5 million solar panels. They plan to continue to expand on this project until it’s able to power the equivalent of over 20,000 homes and businesses. This makes India a leader in the growing solar power industry, and an example of what other countries should be working towards. With a growing population and an abundance of sunlight, this project made perfect sense for the area.
This ten-mile expanse of solar panels knocked the Kamuthi solar project out of the lead for largest solar facility in February of 2017. The Longyangxia Dam Solar Project contains over 4 million solar panels, and can power entire cities. Located in China, this solar power plant is in the perfect location to maximize sunlight. Again, China has a rapidly growing population and certain areas have suffered with air quality issues due to pollution. Projects like this will greatly improve their quality of life.
The Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Project
It didn’t take long for this power plant to usurp the title of largest solar power plant in the world. The Kurnool Ultra Mega Solar Park, located in India, is large enough to produce 1GW of energy. It doesn’t look like India is done yet either. They continue to be a leader in renewable energy projects, and are on track to eventually replace their traditional energy grid. These may be some of the most important energy innovations of our time.
